Our Breaking into Fintech series looks into what leading fintech companies are seeking in new hires, to give job-searchers an edge when joining the industry.

This time around, Finextra interviewed Tamsyn Cole, director of people and culture at Gresham Technologies, a software company that specialises in reconciliation tools and regulatory reporting solutions.

What top tips can you offer candidates looking to join the industry?

Cole explains that to work in the fintech sector you don’t always need to be an expert in tech: “We recruit top talent from different industries, so it’s not necessary to have a financial services or fintech background for all roles, but it’s useful to have an interest and an understanding of the key trends and challenges in these areas.

“Being able to demonstrate awareness of relevant technologies, regulations, and market dynamics impacting the industry is a plus. Even if a candidate doesn’t, we’d encourage them to do some research so that they can showcase an understanding of the importance of data quality within the finance industry.”

What does Gresham Tech want from their ideal candidates?

Cole highlights that they look for employees whose values align with those of the company, and who will be able to suit the collaborative and diverse company culture. She states that those who work at Gresham are frequently looking for new challenges, working together to find solutions, and embracing different outlooks and backgrounds. Healthy debate and open discussions are encouraged!
