There is no disputing that the post-pandemic popularity of remote working options has helped ease the work-life balance conundrum, but it has not solved it entirely.

In fact, the vast majority (75%) of UK workers still have an unhealthy relationship with work and the issue is so persistent, 83% would be willing to take a pay cut to guarantee a happier work life.

Why are so many workers unhappy in their roles?

Disconnected

Trust and emotional connection have been found to be two of the biggest barriers when it comes to workplace happiness.

With so many Brits working remotely for all or part of the week— we spend the least amount of time in the office compared to our global counterparts at 34% and 50% respectively—lack of connection with colleagues is an issue that continues to persist.

This is having a knock-on effect on other elements of our lives with 65% of workers sharing that their unhealthy relationship with work has had an impact on their physical health and 57% stipulated that it was taking its toll on their mental health.

As a consequence, 67% are considering leaving their jobs entirely and looking for a new opportunity in a company that will not have such a negative impact.

Taking control

If you are part of this cohort, there are a couple of things you can do to make your working life better.

For starters, look at the areas that are causing you the most stress? Is it an email inbox that seems to clog up with hundreds of mails throughout the day if you do not respond to everything within seconds? Is it colleagues not respecting professional boundaries and contacting you at all hours and on weekends?

Once you identify the main areas of contention, speak to your line manager and ask them to help you resolve them.

However, sometimes despite your best intentions a toxic culture can’t be changed and if you really want to redress your work-life balance, a new job is the only solution.
