Argenti, currently vice president of technology at AWS, replaces Wiesel, who joined the bank as a college graduate to work as a coder in its commodities division, before working his way up the ladder over the course of a 25 year career.

Separately, Goldman has hired Verizon exec Atte Lahtiranta as chief technology officer, replacing John Madsen, who is also leaving the firm, according to an internal memo seen by the FT.

Both new men are joining as partners, despite the stated aim of CEO David Solomon to cut the number of partners.

"With the excellent work already under way across the organization, the firm will benefit significantly from the considerable experience and best practices that both Marco and Atte bring in cloud computing and core engineering," says Solomon in a note.
