According to a report in Dow unit the Wall Street Journal, the firm's systems were breached between August 2012 and this July, although details of fewer than 3500 people appear to have been compromised.

Dow Jones CEO William Lewis says that there is no direct evidence that information was stolen and that the crooks seem to have been after contact information so that they could send out fraudulent messages.

In a letter to customers, Lewis says: "The need to stay ahead of those who seek to do us and our customers harm is an ongoing priority; we will continue to do everything we can to protect our customers and our systems."
