Telstra says the NAB ATMs will work using its Next G national mobile network instead of physical communication lines, making them ideal for major sports and cultural outdoor events.

The wireless ATMs were piloted at the Australia Formula One grand prix in Melbourne last month. There are several other major outdoor events across the country slated to accommodate the technology over the next few months, says the telco.

"This innovation has enabled the rapid deployment of ATMs into temporary locations saving time and money as well as eliminating the need for temporary lines," says David Thodey, group managing director, Telstra Enterprise and Government.

Last year NAB and Telstra partnered Visa to launch the country's first mobile payments trial to allow select cardholders in Melbourne to pay for purchases using their hand sets.
