US financial services firm Citigroup is creating a further 185 jobs at its technology centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Citigroup said in November 2004 that it was opening an IT centre in Belfastto support its corporate and investment banking operations.

In today's statement yhe bank says the latest investment will contribute a further £21 million to the local economy and bring employment at the Belfast operation to 560.

Regional economic development agency Invest Northern Ireland has offered £3.6 million in financial assistance for the investment.

Robert Druskin, chief executive officer at Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking, announced the new jobs as he and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Peter Hain officially opened a new Citigroup premises in the Northern Ireland Science Park.

"Our Belfast centre has delivered significant benefits to our global operations, enhancing competitiveness and enabling us to tap into the advanced technology and knowledge skills base which continues to grow in Northern Ireland," says Druskin. "With the rapid development of our Belfast operation, we are now in a position to strengthen our presence with a second major investment."

Says Hain: "This new investment will strengthen Citigroup's presence in Northern Ireland, provide high quality, sustainable career opportunities and further enhance and build Northern Ireland's reputation as a world class centre for financial services companies."
